HISTORY

OUR PAST THAT GUIDES OUR FUTURE
Rokkatei was founded in 1933 in Obihiro City, in the fertile land of Tokachi under clear blue skies.
Mr. Oda faithfully followed the teachings and principles of his mentor; "No matter the cost, always use the best ingredients to make the most delicious sweets." Even during times when sugar became extremely expensive in Japan, he always used generous amounts in his confectionery creations, delighting in the smiles of all his customers who always said, "Oishii (Delicious)!"
This guiding principle became the foundation of Rokkatei’s confectionery making, and to this day, they continue to source the finest ingredients from both Japan and abroad.

The Tokachi Plains, Japan’s largest agricultural region, where patchwork-like farmlands stretch as far as the eye can see. Lush greenery shines in the summer light, turning into fields of gold in autumn.

SWEETS AS A MEASUREMENT OF CULTURE
At an economic seminar in 1951, the words of a university professor left a deep impression on the founder, Toyoshiro Oda; "Sweets are a barometer of culture." Oda made it his mission to create the finest signature confections that would represent Obihiro City and contribute to advancing the region’s food culture.
This philosophy remains at the core of Rokkatei to this day, reflected in the creation of sweets like the MARUSEI BUTTER COOKIE SANDWICH and the RICH LAND CHEESE SABLES, the latter being designed in the image of brick silos found in rural Tokachi, a region known for its dairy farming.
This dedication to honoring local culture with the design and names of our products extends beyond confectionary creations with cultural endeavors such as operating art museums, libraries, and gardens.

Banseisha, which was a pioneering company in Obihiro City, produced and sold butter cans in the early 1900s.
The design of the Marusei Butter Cookie Sandwich packaging was designed after the label of those cans.

A TIMELESS TASTE
We strive to become a pillar of our wonderful customers’ daily lives, whether they’re taking a break, sharing a thoughtful gift, or enjoying a treat for a special occasion. With that in mind, we aim to give our sweets timeless appeal by creating delicious treats that always satisfy, are always enticing, and are always improving. In order to achieve this, rather than chasing popular trends, we work to refine the elements of our confectionary creations to continuously improve taste, texture, aroma, and even the shape of our delicious sweets.
Many of our most popular sweets were created decades ago, like our WHITE CHOCOLATE SQUARE, first made in Japan in 1968, and our signature MARUSEI BUTTER COOKIE SANDWICH, adored nationwide since its release in 1977. While these beloved sweets have been around for decades, we have continued to perfect our recipes over time so that the sweets everyone loves just keep getting better. We want every occasion you enjoy Rokkatei sweets to be even better than the last.

ROKKATEI’S TRADEMARK FLORAL PATTERN
In 1961, the floral-patterned wrapping paper featuring wildflowers native to Hokkaido was designed by artist Naoyuki Sakamoto, a renowned mountain landscape painter. The founder had visited Sakamoto in Hiroo, Tokachi to request illustrations for the cover of a children's poetry magazine he had started. After meticulously drawing each plant and flower, Sakamoto collaged them together with careful attention to size and balance. This wrapping paper later became the design for shopping bags and has since grown into a signature of Rokkatei.
