A Messenger of Spring from Hokkaido — Fukinoto

Hokkaido, where we continue to craft our confections, is a land rich in nature at the northern edge of Japan. Here, even before the cherry blossoms begin to bloom, a small plant quietly signals the arrival of spring.

It is called fukinoto—butterbur buds.

Gently emerging through the last traces of snow, they bring soft color back to the earth. Their buds are often enjoyed as tempura, offering a delicate bitterness that has long been part of how we welcome the changing seasons—both in sight and in taste.

Our WHITE CHOCOLATE SQUARE, the first white chocolate ever made in Japan, is one of our origins. Since its debut in 1968, its packaging has been adorned with the image of fukinoto, a quiet messenger of spring in Hokkaido.

Made with rich Hokkaido milk and high-quality cocoa butter, it offers a smooth, gentle melt on the palate. Today, this chocolate is also used in the cream of our bestselling MARUSEI BUTTER COOKIE SANDWICH.

We hope that, as you enjoy it, you might take a moment to imagine the soft arrival of spring in this distant northern land.

The advertisement for the release of our White Chocolate featured the catchphrase, “When you think of Obihiro City!,” in honor of our hometown.
