Our Signature Sweet: MARUSEI BUTTER COOKIE SANDWICH

One of the questions we’re often asked is: “What does Marusei mean?”

The answer takes us back more than a century.

In the early 1900s, in Obihiro, Hokkaido—our birthplace—a pioneering company contributed to the region’s growth and helped it become known as a dairy heartland. That company produced and sold butter under the trademark “Marusei Butter.”

When our founder later created this cookie sandwich, he carried forward the name Marusei as a tribute to the history and culture rooted in Hokkaido. The package design also reflects the spirit of those original butter tins from that era.

Our philosophy has always been simple:

“No matter the cost, always use the best ingredients to make the most delicious sweets.”

Guided by this belief, we carefully select ingredients from around the world.

For the MARUSEI BUTTER COOKIE SANDWICH, we use raisins from California.
Grown under abundant sunshine, these grapes develop a natural sweetness, a rich flavor, and a soft, plump texture. They pair beautifully with our smooth butter cream and tender cookies.

This beloved sweet brings together the history of Hokkaido and the blessings of California. We hope you’ll enjoy discovering why it has remained our signature treat for generations.
